A beautiful and collectible Wedgwood jasperware wall clock from the 1970s, in the rare sage green colourway — one of the most elegant expressions of Wedgwood's greatest and most enduring ceramic tradition.

The circular sage green jasperware body is decorated with a continuous frieze of white bas-relief neoclassical figures — draped goddesses, classical warriors, children and trees modelled in the finest white stoneware relief, each one crisp and precisely executed. The figures encircle a recessed central clock face framed by a gold-tone bezel carrying Roman numerals, with slim black hands and a red seconds hand reading clearly against the sage ground. The whole composition is as refined and considered as any piece Wedgwood has produced in its long and distinguished history.

At 9.5 inches (24cm) in diameter this is a generous and well-proportioned piece — substantial enough to make a real statement on any wall. The reverse carries the impressed Wedgwood ® Made in England mark — the authentic factory stamp that confirms this as a genuine Wedgwood piece produced at the Barlaston factory, and places production to 1975 at the earliest. Quartz battery movement, fully working. Ready to hang.

Wedgwood Jasperware — A Tradition Since 1775

Wedgwood jasperware is one of the most iconic ceramic traditions in British history. Developed by Josiah Wedgwood from the late 1770s, jasperware is a fine unglazed stoneware, coloured with metallic oxides and decorated with applied white relief designs — initially in the fashionable neoclassical style that defined Georgian taste, and continuing in that tradition ever since.

The sage green colourway — described by Wedgwood himself as "sea-green" — is one of the rarer jasperware grounds, produced alongside the more familiar pale blue, dark blue and lilac. It gives pieces a warmth and subtlety that the cooler blue colourways do not possess, and it is particularly sought after by collectors.

The neoclassical relief figures on this clock draw on the tradition established by John Flaxman Jr., the sculptor who began supplying Wedgwood with designs in 1775 and whose work remains inseparable from the jasperware aesthetic. These figures — draped, graceful and entirely classical in character — are the visual language of Wedgwood at its most confident and most characteristic.
