Edinburgh Weavers — 624 objects in the V&A collection

Edinburgh Weavers was founded in 1928 and became Britain's most artistically ambitious furnishing fabric manufacturer under director Alastair Morton, who from 1931 commissioned designs from Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Paul Nash, Lucienne Day, Victor Vasarely, Elisabeth Frink, and Terence Conran — a roster of artists that no other British fabric house could match. Edinburgh Weavers furnished BBC Broadcasting House in 1932, won the highest design commissions of the era, and built a reputation for combining traditional weaving mastery with the most forward-thinking artistic collaborations of the 20th century. The V&A holds 624 Edinburgh Weavers objects in their permanent collection — the fullest institutional record of any British furnishing fabric manufacturer of the period.

Production ceased in the late 1960s following the premature death of Alastair Morton in 1963. Lombardy, dating from the final chapter of Edinburgh Weavers' production, is among the last fabrics the company ever made — and among the rarest to find in usable, display-quality condition today.

Lombardy — jacquard weaving at its finest

The Lombardy jacquard deploys a bold scrolling damask acanthus motif that carries the visual weight of a classical furnishing fabric while wearing it with the confidence of a design that knows exactly what it is. The raised jacquard weave gives the surface a sculptural depth and tactile quality that printed fabrics simply cannot achieve — the pattern catches the light differently from different angles, the texture as much a part of the design as the colour. In olive green, brown, and ivory, the palette is warm, earthy, and deeply sophisticated — as relevant to contemporary interiors today as it was to the 1960s rooms it was designed for.

These cushion covers have been professionally sewn from rare, original Edinburgh Weavers fabric, with zip closures for easy pad removal and laundering.
