1940s Ferranti Copper Wall Clock – Rare Art Deco Industrial British Timepiece
1940s Ferranti industrial wall clock — rare copper-cased example. A genuine piece of British industrial history, originally installed in a public building during Ferranti's clock-making years at their Hollinwood, Manchester factory. Silent quartz movement, fully working. 36 cm (14¼ inches) diameter. Ready to hang.
Why the copper case matters
Ferranti produced synchronous institutional clocks from 1932 to 1957, supplying railway stations, tram and bus depots, factories, hospitals, and military facilities across Britain. The overwhelming majority were housed in painted iron or steel cases. Copper-cased examples are rarely seen — the warm, burnished tone of the copper gives this clock a completely different character from the standard institutional grey, making it as much a decorative object as a historical artefact.
The clock
The original dial shows natural patina and foxing developed over eight decades — not a flaw, but the authentic mark of a clock that has lived through history. The Art Deco-inspired Arabic numeral dial with its bold, clean numerals and Ferranti maker's marks is exactly as produced. The copper case has been sympathetically cleaned to enhance the warm metal tone while preserving all original character and wear. A new silent quartz movement ensures reliable, quiet everyday timekeeping.
At 36 cm (14¼ inches) diameter and 8 cm depth, it is a genuinely substantial piece — built to be read across a large public room. It works beautifully in a kitchen, hallway, loft apartment, office, studio, or retail space, and sits naturally in industrial, vintage, or contemporary interiors alike.
About Ferranti
Ferranti was founded in 1885 by Sebastian de Ferranti and grew into one of Britain's most significant engineering companies — producing power transformers for the National Grid, radar equipment during the Second World War, and the first commercial computer sold in the UK. Clock production ran from 1932 to 1957 at their Hollinwood, Manchester factory, a relatively brief chapter in a 108-year company history that makes genuine surviving examples all the more collectible. Ferranti ceased trading in 1993.
