Garant — West Germany's finest ceramic clocks

Garant, later trading as Hugo Hättich, were one of West Germany's leading makers of ceramic wall clocks from the early 1950s onwards. Their clocks — made from high-quality glazed porcelain with mechanical movements incorporating the Schwebe-Anker (floating anchor) escapement — were sold across Europe and are now collected internationally. The name Schwebe-Anker refers to the precision lever escapement that distinguished Garant's movements from lesser German clock production of the same era.

Garant ceramic clocks of this period are increasingly scarce in good condition. The combination of quality porcelain, considered design, and reliable German engineering has made them a staple of mid-century modern interiors — appearing regularly on 1stDibs, in design collections, and among serious collectors of post-war European decorative objects.

The clock

The pale mint green glaze is one of the most desirable colourways in Garant's ceramic range — a quintessentially 1950s kitchen colour that sits beautifully in both period and contemporary interiors. The cream inner ring and cream dial give the clock a layered, considered quality, and the twelve raised gold baton markers catch the light in a way that flat-printed dials cannot replicate. The original leaf-shaped hands in sage green are a period detail that perfectly complements the glaze colour — an unusually harmonious design from a manufacturer known for their attention to colour and finish.

A new quartz movement and matching hands have been fitted, giving this beautiful ceramic case reliable, silent, battery-powered timekeeping for everyday use.
