1960s Metamec teak and nickel sunburst wall clock, Model 5892 — a rare nickel finish variant, the least commonly seen of the two Metamec sunburst finishes. Solid teak rays alternating with nickel-tone metal spokes, professionally restored, new quartz movement. 60 cm (23½ inches) diameter. Fully working, ready to hang.

The rare one — nickel and teak

Metamec produced their iconic sunburst wall clocks in two primary finish combinations — brass and teak and nickel and teak. Brass examples are well documented and regularly found on the market. The nickel finish — cooler, more silvery, with a clean Scandinavian character — is significantly rarer and less frequently encountered by collectors. For those who already own a brass  Metamec sunburst, or for buyers who prefer the cooler palette that nickel brings, this is the variant that completes a collection or makes the distinction.

Metamec was the largest clock manufacturer in the UK at their peak, employing 750 people at their Dereham, Norfolk factory and producing 350 models before going into receivership in 1984. The nickel and teak 5892 dates from the height of the Dereham factory's production in the 1960s — the decade when Metamec's designs were at their most adventurous and their quality at its finest.

The clock

The alternating solid teak rays and cool nickel-tone metal spokes create a visual contrast quite distinct from the warmer brass variants — the teak's natural grain reads against the silvery metal with a crispness that suits Scandinavian, minimalist, and mid century modern interiors particularly well. At 60 cm (23½ inches) diameter it is a commanding piece with the sculptural presence to anchor any wall.
