Anstey & Wilson

Anstey & Wilson were English clockmakers active through the 1960s and 70s, best known today for exactly this kind of design — sunburst and starburst wall clocks pairing warm teak "rays" with polished brass fittings. Alongside makers like Metamec and Smiths, Anstey & Wilson pieces were part of the wave of affordable, design-led wall clocks that brought a Scandinavian-influenced, atomic-age look into ordinary British homes. Original examples are increasingly sought after by mid-century collectors, and this piece retains its maker's signature and "Automatic" branding on the dial.

Design & Styling

This is the more familiar Anstey & Wilson silhouette — twelve slim, tapered teak spikes forming a classic sunburst around a brass-ringed face — but the dial itself is the standout. Rather than the usual gold or champagne finish, it has a deep, dark bronze tone, giving the whole clock a moodier, more grown-up look than the typical bright mid-century sunburst. Blue-grey Roman numerals alternate with small decorative brass fan/leaf motifs at each hour, and a bright red sweeping seconds hand adds a real pop of colour against the dark background.

At 43cm across, it reads as a proper wall statement without being oversized, and the darker face means it works especially well against lighter walls where a gold-dial sunburst can feel a little too bright.
