Genalex Smiths Ship Wheel Clock: Brass, Convex Glass, 1950s British Quartz
A rare and beautifully preserved British ship's wheel wall clock by Genalex — a GEC trade name for clocks manufactured by Smiths of Great Britain, one of the most respected British clockmakers of the twentieth century. The ship's wheel format, with eight solid brass finial-tipped spokes radiating from a polished brass bezel, is a classic of 1950s British decorative design — and this example is in exceptional condition.
The domed convex glass lens over the dial is an especially fine detail, giving the clock a depth and presence that flat-glass equivalents simply can't match. Behind it, the silver dial carries crisp black Arabic numerals with a fine minute track, and the Genalex name is printed cleanly at the upper centre. Originally mains-powered, now fitted with a new silent quartz movement and new hands — keeping perfect time.
Solid brass throughout: bezel ring, all eight spokes and their acorn finials. Made in Great Britain is printed on the dial. A genuinely hard-to-find piece — in several years of dealing in vintage British clocks this is the first Genalex ship's wheel example we have seen.
