A rare and genuinely beautiful Belgian Art Deco mantel clock by the Faïencerie de la Majolique de Wasmuel — one of Belgium's most celebrated faience manufacturers, whose pieces are actively collected on both sides of the Atlantic. A piece of considerable decorative presence and authenticated provenance, now fitted with a new German quartz micro movement and entirely ready to use.

The ceramic case is an extraordinary composition in two distinct registers. At 15 inches wide and 10 inches tall it is an imposing piece — one that commands a mantelpiece, sideboard or shelf with genuine authority. The upper body is an oval fan form decorated in the stained-glass tradition — geometric segments of soft pink, pale blue, cream and butter yellow separated by bold black manganese outlines, the colours glowing with the characteristic depth of hand-applied tin glaze. The large central oval aperture — 5.5 inches wide by 4 inches tall — is framed by a brass bezel in good vintage condition housing a silvered dial with bold black Arabic numerals and the MW monogram at centre, with new hands matched to the originals. The stepped rectangular base is covered in a richly textured blue and white sponged glaze — a contrasting and entirely harmonious ground that anchors the upper form with confidence. The reverse carries the triangular impressed mark reading "M.W. / La Majolique / Wasmuel" — the authentic factory stamp of the Wasmuel manufactory.

New German quartz micro movement, new hands matched to originals. Ready to display.

Faïencerie de la Majolique de Wasmuel — Belgian Ceramic Heritage

The Faïencerie de Wasmuel was established in Wasmuel in the Hainaut region of Belgium in the late 19th century, producing faience — tin-glazed earthenware — in the majolica tradition that had roots stretching back through Italian and Moorish ceramic history. By the Art Deco period the factory was producing some of its most distinctive work, bringing the bold geometric forms and vivid colour palette of the new decorative movement to their characteristic faience technique.

The stained-glass geometric design on this clock — bold coloured segments separated by black outlines — is one of the most visually striking expressions of the Art Deco aesthetic in Belgian ceramic production. These clocks were originally sold as part of garniture sets alongside matching vases; complete sets today command prices well into four figures at premium dealers. The clock alone, with its exceptional decorative impact, imposing scale and authenticated maker's marks, is a significant collector's piece.

The triangular MW mark is the definitive attribution — confirming this as a genuine Wasmuel piece produced at the height of the factory's Art Deco output in the 1920s to 1930s.

Condition

Good vintage condition consistent with a genuine piece of this age and character. The faience panels display fine craquelure — the characteristic crazing of aged tin glaze that is entirely normal and expected in pieces of this period and adds to the authenticity of the surface. A hairline crack is present to the rear upper section of the case — visible on close inspection but not visible from the front and not affecting the structural integrity or decorative presentation of the piece. The silvered dial shows foxing — age-related spotting to the silver surface that is honest and characteristic of a genuine antique dial of this period. The brass bezel is in good vintage condition. The new German quartz movement and matched hands are fitted and working.

A rare and characterful piece of Belgian Art Deco ceramic heritage — the kind of clock that tells a story as well as the time.
