Metamec 4640 Wall Clock, 1979, Silver Sunburst Dial, Chrome Bezel, Quartz, Made in England

A Metamec Model 4640 wall clock, dated 1979, 8.25 inches (21cm) across, with a silver sunburst dial that throws light in fine radiating lines. It has bold black Arabic numerals, a red seconds hand and a faux chrome bezel under flat glass. Fitted with a new quartz movement and new hands that exactly match the originals, in very good vintage condition.

Metamec of Dereham, Norfolk

Metamec started around 1941 in Dereham, Norfolk, as an offshoot of the furniture maker Jentique, and released its first clock, the mains-powered Model 701, around 1947. By the 1960s and 70s it was the largest clock manufacturer in the UK, with around 750 staff and some 25,000 clocks leaving the factory each week. The company is best remembered for its chrome, teak and brass sunburst designs. This 4640 comes from near the end of that golden era, and "Metamec Quartz" and "Made in England" are both printed on the dial.

A sunburst dial that catches the light

The brushed sunburst face shifts between bright silver and soft grey as you move past it. Large black numerals keep it easy to read, and the red seconds hand adds a single point of colour. The faux chrome bezel and flat glass give it the clean, practical look that suits a kitchen, hallway or any retro room.

A new quartz movement keeps accurate time and has a soft, audible tick. The hands are new and made to match the originals exactly.
