1982-1983 Metamec chiming wall clock, Model 4876 — a rare, sculptural piece with a brushed aluminium dial and face surround set within a rounded square brown plastic case, chiming on the hour with a choice of two melodies or silent mode. 30.5 x 30.5cm (12 x 12 inches), 20.3cm (8 inch) dial, original West German movement and hands retained, quiet step seconds tick, fully working. Ready to hang.

A genuinely rare Metamec, made for only two years.

Metamec — The Pride of Dereham, Norfolk

Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom, at their peak employing around 750 workers and producing 350 different models and 25,000 clocks every week. Metamec were the first British company to manufacture their own quartz movements, and by the early 1980s were increasingly pairing German-made mechanisms with their British case designs as the company entered its final years before receivership in December 1984. The Model 4876 was produced for only two years, 1982 to 1983, making surviving examples in this condition genuinely uncommon.

A confident Space Age design with real function

The design is bold and architectural — a rounded square brown plastic case frames a brushed aluminium dial and surround, with four crossbar spokes and polished centre finials at each corner giving the whole piece real sculptural presence. Gold baton hour markers sit against the brushed silver-gold dial, signed "Metamec" beneath the 12 and "Chime" above the 6. Unlike Metamec's purely decorative starburst designs, this is a genuinely functional piece — the original West German movement chimes on the hour with a choice of two melodies, or can be switched to silent running, and drives a quiet-ticking step seconds hand. The case has been cleaned and repolished, and the glass is in perfect condition throughout.

At 12 x 12 inches, this is a substantial, confident piece — as close to new-old-stock condition as a genuinely used example gets, without the original box.
