Metamec 5859 Starburst Wall Clock — Copper & Black Bakelite, 1960s, Kienzle Quartz
A rare and striking example of the Metamec model 5859 in its copper variant — one of the most visually distinctive wall clocks to come out of 1960s Britain. Made in England by Metamec of Dereham, Norfolk, and marked as such on the reverse of the dark Bakelite case.
The design centres on a convex-glass dial ringed with a deep navy-black lacquered Bakelite surround, itself encircled by a polished copper frame studded with round copper ball details. Four sharp copper finials — two horizontal, one at 12 and one at 6 — project from the frame in classic compass-point style, giving the clock real presence on the wall. The copper dial ring, original copper hands, and copper finials have all been professionally stripped, cleaned and polished before listing.
The white dial centre carries the Metamec name and Made in England text, with bold period numerals in the copper chapter ring. Running on a UTS Kienzle quartz movement (AA battery) — accurate and silent. A genuinely rare colourway in excellent condition, ready to hang.
