Metamec Sunburst Wall Clock, Model 5890 Copper Variant, 1960s Teak & Copper Starburst, 44cm, England
1960s Metamec teak and copper starburst wall clock, Model 5890 — the copper variant of one of Britain's most iconic mid-century designs. 44cm (17½ inches) diameter, new quartz movement, fully working. Ready to hang.
An icon of British mid-century design, in its rarer copper colourway.
Metamec
Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 — an offshoot of wartime furniture manufacturer Jentique — and grew to become Britain's largest clock manufacturer before going into receivership in 1984. Their sunburst designs, produced during the height of the Eames era, remain among the most sought-after pieces of British atomic age design. The teak and copper colourway seen here is less commonly found than the standard teak and brass version, giving it added appeal for collectors seeking something a little different.
Design & Styling
The starburst frame features alternating teak spokes and small copper-toned rays, with a copper accent spoke set between each pair — a combination that reads warmer and more subdued than the brighter brass or chrome sunburst designs of the same era. The radiating spokes still catch the light beautifully, but the copper tone gives this example a richer, more autumnal character. This is a clock that works as much as a piece of wall sculpture as a timepiece.
The original hands have been retained and paired with a new quartz movement for reliable, low-maintenance running. Black spade hands with gold seconds, this is a ticking clock with a step seconds hand.
