1960s Metamec cream bakelite wall clock, Model 755 — an Art Deco style piece with sweeping fluted flares to each corner, originally mains-powered and now converted to quartz while retaining the original bakelite mains cover for authenticity. 21.6cm (8.5 inches) diameter, silent mechanism, fully working. Ready to hang.

A genuine piece of Metamec's earliest electric clockmaking, sympathetically restored.

Metamec — The Pride of Dereham, Norfolk

Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom, at their peak employing around 750 workers and producing 350 different models and 25,000 clocks every week. This clock's original mains movement carries a genuine "Tick/Silent" switch — a period feature that let the original owner silence the clock's tick, marked directly on the movement plate alongside "200/250 Volts 50 Cycles." It's a small but authentic detail from Metamec's earliest years as an electric clockmaker, before quartz technology arrived.

Art Deco curves in cream bakelite

The model 755 is a striking example of Metamec's Art Deco-influenced design language — a square case with dramatically swept, fluted flares curling from each corner, giving the whole piece real sculptural movement. The cream bakelite has been cleaned and repolished to bring back its warm, glossy finish, and new hands have been fitted, sympathetically matching the elegant original fleur-de-lis style. The clock has been converted from its original 1960s mains power to a modern quartz movement, with the original bakelite mains cover retained inside for authenticity rather than discarded — a small nod to the clock's genuine electrical history.

At 8.5 inches across and 2.5 inches deep, this is a substantial, characterful piece — Art Deco styling that stands apart from the more common mid-century starburst designs of the same era.
