A clean, graphic and thoroughly timeless Metamec wall clock from the 1960s — the model 5868, one of the most versatile and enduringly appealing designs in the Metamec range. White, chrome and black. Nothing superfluous. Entirely right.

The bright white embossed dial carries bold raised black Arabic numerals of generous scale, a continuous minute ring of fine dash markers, and the Metamec name in a neat boxed cartouche at twelve. The polished chrome bezel sits close and clean against the dial, giving the clock a precision and authority that the looser-fitting bezels of lesser clocks cannot match. The convex glass adds a pleasing sense of depth. New quartz movement, black hands with vivid red seconds. Originally mains-powered — now battery-silent and ready to use anywhere. 8 inches (20cm) diameter. Ready to hang.

Metamec — The Pride of Dereham, Norfolk

Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom, producing 350 different models at their peak. The model 5868 is one of the most enduringly appealing of the kitchen and domestic range — a clean, uncluttered white dial with bold numerals and chrome bezel that works as naturally in a contemporary kitchen as it did in a 1960s one. This is the model that appeals to buyers who want genuine vintage character without period decoration — the Metamec that simply looks right wherever it goes.

Originally mains-powered from the Dereham factory, this example has been fitted with a new quartz battery movement and now runs silently on a single AA battery. The character of the original piece is entirely intact.
