Metamec Spode Collaboration Wall Clock – 1976 Firenze Pattern Bone China Quartz 10.5 Inch England
A rare and beautiful wall clock produced through the collaboration between Metamec and Spode — two of England's most celebrated manufacturers — in the delicate Firenze pattern bone china. Produced from 1976 to 1980, this is a piece of genuine dual-manufacturer heritage in very good vintage condition.
The Spode bone china plate body carries the Firenze pattern border — a continuous band of refined blue acanthus scrollwork interspersed with soft pink floral accents, enclosed within fine platinum lines and punctuated by circular medallions of delicate blue rosette detail. The white ground gives the whole composition an elegant lightness that is entirely characteristic of the finest English bone china of the period. The recessed central clock face carries bold black Roman numerals with fleur-de-lys style minute markers, with the central disc printed in the matching Firenze scrollwork pattern. The dial itself bears the "Metamec Spode" collaboration label and "Quartz" marking — confirming authenticity. Ornate blackened hands complete the composition with considerable elegance.
At 10.5 inches (26.5cm) in diameter this is a generously scaled and beautifully presented piece. Quartz battery movement, working with an audible tick. Ready to hang.
Two English Institutions — One Beautiful Object
Spode was founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 1770 by Josiah Spode, who perfected both transfer printing on earthenware and the formula for fine bone china — two innovations that transformed the British ceramics industry and whose influence is felt to this day. By the early 19th century Spode had become one of the world's leading pottery manufacturers, producing pieces of extraordinary refinement for markets across the globe.
Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and became the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Their collaboration with Spode in the mid-to-late 1970s brought together the finest English ceramic tradition and the finest English clock-making tradition in a short-lived range of bone china plate clocks — pieces that belonged simultaneously to both heritages. The Firenze pattern, with its sophisticated blue and pink scrollwork border, was one of the more refined designs in the Spode range of this period, and it translates beautifully to the clock format.
The collaboration ran for approximately four years, making surviving examples in good condition genuinely scarce. The dual "Metamec Spode" label on the dial confirms this as an authentic collaboration piece — not a converted plate, but a purpose-designed clock produced jointly by both manufacturers.
