Metamec Starburst Wall Clock Rare White Gold Bakelite Vintage 50s 60s
A genuinely rare Metamec starburst wall clock — a scalloped white petal case with a black and gold bezel ring, gold cursive numerals at 12, 3, 6 and 9, and polished chrome hour markers. 9 inches (22.9cm) diameter, 6 inch (15.2cm) dial. Fully refurbished to an exacting standard — new German UTS quartz movement, original hands retained, fully working. Ready to hang.
A piece we'd genuinely never seen before.
Metamec — Dereham, Norfolk
Metamec was founded around 1941 in Dereham, Norfolk, as an offshoot of furniture makers Jentique — the name itself derived from "metal-work and mechanics." By the 1960s and 70s Metamec had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the UK, employing around 750 people and producing some 25,000 clocks a week across 350 different models. This particular design is a genuinely scarce one — we've not come across it in reference archives of Metamec's catalogue, and it was originally mains electric powered, pointing to an earlier Metamec piece from the 1950s–60s.
A full, careful restoration
This clock has been completely stripped down and restored: the chrome hour markers and bezel have been re-polished to a bright shine, the bakelite case re-polished to bring back its original lustre, and the white petal finials around the edge stripped back and re-sprayed. The original hands have been retained and fitted to a new German UTS quartz movement, so the clock keeps accurate time while staying completely true to the piece. Signed "Metamec, Made in England" on the dial.
At 9 inches across, it's a genuinely pretty, compact starburst — a lovely statement piece for a hallway, kitchen, or small wall space where a full-size sunburst wouldn't fit.
