Late 1970s Metamec brass sunburst wall clock, Model 5629 — a rare, sculptural starburst wall clock with alternating pointed brass rays and gold accent spokes, fitted with a new quartz movement while retaining its original hands, professionally restored to an exacting standard. 60 cm (23.5 inches) diameter, fully working. Ready to hang.

A short production run — one of the scarcer Metamec sunburst designs

Metamec was founded in 1947 in East Dereham, Norfolk, as an offshoot of the furniture maker Jentique, and quickly grew into a major force in British clockmaking. The factory expanded through the 1960s and 70s to employ around 750 people, producing 350 models and turning out 25,000 clocks a week, making Metamec the largest clock manufacturer in the UK. The company built its own movements in-house and became best known for its bold Sunburst clocks in chrome, teak and brass. Model 5629 dates from the final years of that dominance, produced only between 1978 and 1980, shortly before competition from the German clock industry and cheaper Far Eastern imports drove the company's decline through the 1980s — making genuine, well-preserved examples considerably harder to find than Metamec's longer-running 1960s designs.

Alternating brass rays and gold accent spokes

The 5629's design layers long pointed brass rays with shorter flat gold accent spokes edged in black, giving the sunburst a more intricate, tiered silhouette than Metamec's simpler single-ray models. The warm brass catches the light beautifully across the full span of the piece, while the cream dial with brass baton markers and original Metamec branding keeps the centre clean and legible against the busier rays around it.

At 60 cm (23.5 inches) diameter this is a genuinely commanding piece — large enough to anchor a living room, hallway, or stairwell wall with real presence, and rare enough that good examples don't come up often.
