Metamec Wall Clock 5635 Black Copper Silent Original Quartz 1970s

A striking Metamec Model 5635 wall clock in a black and copper-gold colourway — and unusually, this one runs on its original factory-fitted quartz movement, completely silent, not a later battery conversion. A genuinely rare combination: full originality without the tick.

A different kind of original

Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the UK, at their peak employing 750 workers and producing 350 different models. The 5635 was produced across several colourways through the 1970s, most commonly seen in cream and silver or copper and rose-gold with a mechanical movement. This example is a genuinely uncommon variant — a deep charcoal-black dial surround with silver Arabic numerals, framing a warm copper/black centre disc, paired with copper hands and a red seconds hand for a sharp pop of contrast. Better still, it left the Dereham factory with a quartz movement already fitted — meaning it's both original and silent, a combination far less common than the ticking mechanical pieces usually found.

Why this matters

Most "silent" vintage clocks on the market have been converted — their original mechanical movements swapped out for modern quartz. This one didn't need that: it's running exactly as it left the factory over fifty years ago, keeping time quietly and accurately with nothing replaced. For anyone who wants the genuine vintage story without the audible tick, this is about as good as it gets.
