Metamec Model 5892 Starburst Wall Clock – 1960s Brass Edition Teak Brass Roman Numeral Quartz
A magnificent and boldly dramatic Metamec starburst wall clock — the model 5892 in the brass and teak finish, the warmer and more richly toned of the two variants produced by this celebrated British manufacturer during the 1960s.
Twelve solid teak rays alternate with brass finials, radiating outward from the central clock body with extraordinary visual energy. The contrast between the warm honey tones of the teak and the deep gold of the brass creates a composition of exceptional richness — this is the variant that brings heat and warmth to a wall, the sunburst that reads as genuinely golden. The cream sunburst dial carries bold black Roman numerals and the Metamec name, with slim black hands.
New quartz movement fitted. Made in England. Ready to hang.
The Brass and Teak — The Classic Metamec Combination
Metamec produced their iconic 5892 sunburst wall clock in two primary finish combinations — brass and teak, and nickel and teak. The brass and teak is the warmer, more traditionally mid-century of the two — the combination of natural wood grain and deep gold metal that characterised the most celebrated British and Scandinavian domestic design of the 1960s. It is the finish that most closely evokes the era, and the one most actively collected.
Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom, at their peak employing 750 workers and producing 350 models before going into receivership in 1984. The brass and teak 5892 dates from the height of the Dereham factory's production in the 1960s — the decade when Metamec's designs were at their most adventurous and their quality at its finest.
The alternating solid teak rays and warm brass finials create a visual warmth quite distinct from the cooler nickel variant — the teak's natural grain reads against the gold metal with a richness that suits mid-century modern, eclectic and traditional interiors equally well. A commanding and beautiful piece with the sculptural presence to anchor any wall.
