Phinney-Walker & Semca — an American name, a European craftsman

Phinney-Walker began in early 1900s New York making automobile clocks, and by the 1930s had shifted to being a marketing and import brand rather than a manufacturer in its own right. Production of its clocks was outsourced to specialist clockmakers, and for the postwar period this meant primarily Semca Clock Co. of Germany — confirmed here by "Made in Germany" printed at the base of the dial. Phinney-Walker is a genuinely recognised vintage American name in the sunburst clock world, with the manufacturing craftsmanship behind it coming from one of West Germany's established clockmaking houses.

Twelve rays of brass and teak

This is a big, confident sunburst — twelve ornate brass fleur-de-lis spokes, each finished with a polished brass ball, radiate out to substantial teak arrowhead-shaped finials with a shield-like profile. The wooden finials have been carefully stripped back and refinished with a satin shellac, restoring warmth and depth to the grain without losing any of their original character. At the centre, an ornate scrollwork cover frames a gold dial with bold black Roman numerals and fleur-de-lis motifs at each quarter, signed "Phinney-Walker" in period script beneath the 12.

At over two feet across, this is a genuine statement piece — the kind of sunburst that anchors a room rather than simply decorating a wall. New hands have been fitted to sympathetically match the clock's original style.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. The wooden finials have been professionally stripped and refinished with a satin shellac. The brass shows some age-related pitting consistent with genuine wear, and the dial has slight foxing — both entirely in keeping with a piece of this age and scale, adding to its character rather than detracting from it.
