Rare 1952 Metamec Bakelite Mantel Clock, Model 748, Quartz Movement, Art Deco Style
1952 Metamec walnut brown bakelite mantel clock, Model 748 — a rarely seen piece from the 700 series, Metamec's very first range of clocks. 14 x 14cm (5.5 x 5.5 inches), 7.6cm (3 inches) deep, 11.4cm (4.5 inch) dial, originally mains-powered and now converted to quartz, new hands sympathetically matched to the originals, fully working.
A genuine piece of Metamec's earliest history — one of the first bakelite clocks the company ever made.
Metamec — The Very Beginning, Dereham, Norfolk
Metamec began in Dereham, Norfolk around 1947 as an offshoot of the furniture maker Jentique, using surplus timber and brass left over from wartime ammunition box production. The very first Metamec model was a mains-powered mantel clock numbered "701" — and this Model 748 belongs to that same original 700 series, the company's founding range, before Metamec grew into the largest clock manufacturer in Britain through the 1960s. A clock from this series is a genuine piece of Metamec's earliest history, made when the company was still a small operation finding its feet, years before the sunburst wall clocks that later made the name famous. Surviving examples from this original range are rarely seen.
A confident, rounded Art Deco-influenced form
The case has a distinctive rounded, waisted silhouette in deep walnut brown bakelite, with a cream dial carrying bold black Arabic numerals and elegant fleur-de-lis style hands. Signed "Metamec Dereham" beneath the 12, with "Made in England" printed at the base of the dial. The glass and bakelite case are in perfect condition. Originally mains-powered, the movement has been converted to quartz for practicality, with new hands sympathetically matched to the originals to preserve the clock's period character. The original bakelite movement casing has been kept in place for authenticity rather than discarded.
At 5.5 x 5.5 inches and just 3 inches deep, this is a compact, characterful mantel piece — small enough for a shelf or side table, with real historical weight behind it.
