Smiths Vitreous Enamel Wall Clock Rare 1950s White Red Quartz 8in Gift
1950s Smiths vitreous enamel wall clock — a rare and genuinely distinctive wall clock with a crisp white enamel dial, bold red numerals and markers, and a red enamel bezel ring. 8 inches (20.3cm) diameter, 5 inch (12.7cm) dial, converted to a new quartz movement with the original hands carefully hand-filed to fit, fully working. Ready to hang.
A genuinely scarce find — an enamel-dial Smiths in domestic size, rarely seen this small.
Smiths — built to last
Smiths English Clocks Ltd was established in 1931 by S. Smith and Sons, with its main factory at Cricklewood in north London. Smiths became one of the first companies to produce synchronous electric clocks, launching its first models in late 1931, and grew rapidly through the 1930s — acquiring English Clock and Watch Manufacturers Ltd in Coventry in 1932 and going on to develop landmark products like the "Callboy" synchronous alarm clock. Smiths' clocks are best known today for their robust, honest construction — vitreous enamel dials, in particular, were the company's material of choice for clocks built to last, most commonly seen on their larger institutional, railway, and factory clocks rather than on domestic pieces of this size.
Vitreous enamel, not paint — a genuinely different kind of dial
Unlike a painted or printed dial, a vitreous enamel dial is made by fusing powdered glass onto a metal base at high temperature — the same technique used on classic railway and factory clocks, prized for its durability and the way the white ground stays bright and true over decades. This example is in exceptional condition: no cracking or chipping to the enamel anywhere, with just one tiny, barely noticeable mark near the 9. The glass is also in very good condition, unmarked. Originally mains-electric powered, it has now been fitted with a new quartz movement, and the original hands have been carefully hand-filed to fit the replacement mechanism — keeping the clock's authentic look intact rather than fitting generic replacement hands.
At 8 inches across, this is a wonderfully compact, characterful piece — equally at home in a kitchen, hallway, or study, with a crisp, graphic look that stands out from the usual painted or bakelite wall clocks of the period.
