Staiger Chrometron Wall Clock – 1970s West German Brass Red Lacquer Roman Numeral 11 Inch Quartz
A genuinely striking and highly distinctive Staiger Chrometron wall clock from the 1970s — one of the most visually dramatic pieces from this celebrated West German manufacturer's decorative range, and a rare find in the wall clock format.
The pierced brass outer ring is divided into twelve bold geometric segments, each framing a panel of deep crimson red lacquer with a marbled, tortoiseshell-like depth. At the centre of each red panel sits a raised gold rosette disc — a detail of considerable refinement that speaks to the craft investment in this design. The overall effect is richly decorative and entirely of its moment — bold, confident, and thoroughly West German in its character. The silver sunburst dial with Roman numerals and ornate blackened hands is housed within a brass bezel, and carries the Staiger Chrometron Quartz signature that confirms its provenance.
New quartz movement fitted, original decorative hands retained. 28cm (11 inches) diameter. Ready to hang.
Staiger — Schwenningen Precision, German Design Confidence
Staiger was founded in Schwenningen in the Black Forest, at the heart of Germany's great clockmaking tradition. Their Chrometron range represented the premium decorative end of their production — pieces conceived not merely as timekeepers but as objects of genuine decorative ambition. The Chrometron name itself carried associations of precision and quality, and was applied to some of Staiger's most considered and collectible designs.
The wall clock format of the Chrometron is significantly rarer than the mantel and carriage versions — fewer were made, and fewer survive in good condition. This example, with its intact red lacquer panels, undamaged rosette details and original hands, is an exceptionally well-preserved piece. The "West Germany" provenance dates it firmly to before reunification in 1990.
