Made in Scotland — the Dumbarton factory

Westclox operated one of Britain's most remarkable clock factories at Dumbarton in the Vale of Leven, Scotland — under the General Time Corporation umbrella alongside Seth Thomas. The Dumbarton factory opened in 1948 and at its peak employed 1,100 people, producing 10,000 clocks a week and exporting to over 110 countries. It received a royal visit from Queen Elizabeth II in 1971, and in 1974 hosted a space seminar featuring astronaut Neil Armstrong and astronomer Sir Patrick Moore. The factory closed in 1988, bringing four decades of Scottish clockmaking to an end. A sunburst from this factory is a genuine piece of that history.

The clock

The bold atomic starburst silhouette — dark brown spokes with gold accents radiating outward from a warm champagne dial — captures the confident design language of mid-century modern British interiors at its most assured. The Roman numeral chapter ring, classic black hands, and contrasting red seconds hand complete a palette that is warmly retro without being garish. At 37 cm (14½ inches) diameter it is a substantial and commanding piece, large enough to anchor a living room, kitchen, or hallway wall.

The Quartzmatic name denotes Westclox's quartz-era production — a new movement has been fitted for reliable, silent, battery-powered timekeeping.
