1960s Metamec Teak Brass Sunburst Clock – Mid Century Modern Wall Art
1960s Metamec sunburst wall clock, Model 5890 — a beautifully restored example of one of Britain's most iconic mid century modern clock designs. Teak and brass starburst frame with alternating teak spokes, small brass rays, and brass accent spokes between, professionally restored, new quartz movement. 17½ inches (44 cm) diameter. Fully working, ready to hang.
An icon of British mid-century design
Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 — an offshoot of wartime furniture manufacturer Jentique — and grew to become one of Britain's most respected clockmakers before going into receivership in 1984. Their sunburst designs, produced during the height of the Eames era, remain among the most sought-after pieces of British atomic age design. Comparable examples appear regularly on 1stDibs and Pamono, where collectors and interior designers seek them out for their sculptural quality and authentic mid-century character.
The clock
The starburst frame features alternating teak spokes and small brass rays, with a solid brass spoke set between each pair — a combination of warm wood and polished metal that gives this clock a richly layered, sculptural character quite distinct from all-brass or all-chrome sunburst designs of the same era. The radiating spokes catch the light beautifully, the teak adding warmth and the brass adding brilliance.
This is a clock that works as much as a piece of wall sculpture as a timepiece — the kind of design that defines a room rather than simply occupying it.
