1960s Seth Thomas Teak Sunburst Clock – Large Mid Century Modern Starburst Wall Clock
1960s Seth Thomas teak sunburst wall clock — made in Scotland at the legendary Dumbarton factory. A large and dramatic mid century modern starburst clock with solid teak rays radiating from a gold-tone dial with minimalist hour markers. Professionally restored, new quartz movement. 67.5 cm (26½ inches) diameter. Fully working, ready to hang.
Made in Scotland — the Dumbarton factory
Seth Thomas was a division of General Time Corporation, which operated one of Britain's most remarkable clock factories at Dumbarton in the Vale of Leven, Scotland. The Dumbarton factory opened in 1948 and at its peak employed 1,100 people, producing 10,000 clocks a week and exporting to over 110 countries. It received a royal visit from Queen Elizabeth II in 1971, and in 1974 hosted a space seminar featuring astronaut Neil Armstrong and astronomer Sir Patrick Moore — invited to promote the introduction of quartz timekeeping technology developed partly for the Apollo 11 Command Module. The factory closed in 1988, bringing four decades of Scottish clockmaking to an end. A teak sunburst from this factory is a genuine piece of that history.
The clock
At 67.5 cm (26½ inches) diameter, this is a genuinely large and commanding piece — the solid teak rays radiate dramatically from the central gold-tone dial, creating the bold atomic starburst silhouette that defined the most aspirational Eames era interiors of the late 1950s and 1960s. The warm teak tones contrast elegantly with the metallic centre and minimalist hour markers — a combination of natural material and clean geometry that remains as visually compelling today as when it was made.
Professionally restored and fitted with a new quartz movement for accurate, reliable timekeeping, while preserving the authentic mid-century appearance entirely.
