1960s vintage table lamp — sculptural hourglass vase base in contrasting two-tone wood inlay, with an original spun fibreglass cylindrical shade in deep orange. Rewired and fully tested. 52.5 cm (20¾ inches) tall. Shade: 23.5 cm (9¼ inches) long, 10 cm (4 inches) diameter. Ready to use.

The base — two-tone wood inlay

The hourglass vase base is the centrepiece of this lamp. Its gracefully curved silhouette is inlaid with contrasting wood panels — warm honey-amber tones alternating with rich darker brown, creating a geometric decorative effect that is unmistakably mid-century in character. The wood appears consistent with contrasting tropical hardwoods of the period, possibly mango or similar, giving the base a warmth and individuality that ceramic and ceramic-effect bases of the same era cannot match. There are no visible maker's markings — the base may be British-made or imported, as was common with lamp bases of the 1960s.

The shade — spun fibreglass

Sheerlite Shades Ltd of Sheerwater, Woking, Surrey were the leading British supplier of spun fibreglass lamp shades of this type during the 1960s and 1970s — and the cylindrical spun fibreglass shade on this lamp is entirely consistent with their production. The fine horizontal spinning texture of the fibreglass catches and softens the light in a way that creates a warm, enveloping amber glow when illuminated — as the night photograph shows clearly. The orange fibreglass transforms the atmosphere of a room in a way that modern lamp shades simply cannot replicate.
