1970s Smiths Timecal sunburst wall clock — a beautifully preserved piece of late British clockmaking, featuring a teak and gold starburst frame with a champagne brushed dial, Roman numerals, and a distinctive red sweep seconds hand. Original quartz movement, fully working. 28.5 cm (11¼ inches) diameter. Ready to hang.

One of the last sunburst clocks Smiths ever made

Smiths Industries — founded in London in 1851 — produced clocks, wristwatches, and precision instruments for 128 years, supplying British homes, factories, military aircraft, and motor vehicles before ceasing domestic clock production in 1979. The Timecal name was used on Smiths' most design-forward pieces — the modernist sub-brand for their boldest and most decorative work. This 1970s sunburst is among the final Timecal designs produced before Smiths closed their clock division entirely, giving it a genuine end-of-an-era significance that purely decorative vintage clocks rarely carry.

The clock

The starburst frame combines warm teak-effect wooden segments with a gold-tone metal surround — a material pairing that gives this clock a richer, more layered character than all-metal or all-wood sunburst designs of the same period. The champagne brushed dial with Roman numerals is finished with a bold red sweep seconds hand — a period detail that adds a dash of colour and movement that sets it apart from more restrained examples.

At 28.5 cm diameter it is a versatile size — readable as a focal point but compact enough for a kitchen, office, bedroom, or gallery wall. The design sits naturally across mid century modern, retro, and contemporary interiors alike.
