Artecer Hispacer Sevilla Spanish Ceramic Wall Clock – Cuerda Seca Hand Painted 7 Inch Andalusia
A beautifully hand-crafted ceramic wall clock by Artecer of Sevilla — made under the Hispacer export brand in Alcalá de Guadaíra, Andalusia, using the ancient Moorish Cuerda Seca technique that has been practised in this region since the 8th century.
The scalloped octagonal ceramic body is hand-painted in vivid green, yellow, cream and warm ochre with red and grey accents — a continuous border of bold stylised acanthus leaves, floral medallions and scrolling vine interspersed with raised tulip motifs in a composition of genuine decorative exuberance. The recessed cream dial carries incised Arabic numerals in a warm gold tone, with a central painted star motif in yellow and green, and ornate blackened hands with a vivid red seconds hand reading crisply against the pale ground. The whole piece is finished in 24K gold enamel — the signature mark of Artecer's finest production. Quartz battery movement, working. Ready to hang.
Artecer — The Finest Sevillian Ceramic Tradition
Artecer is the most prestigious manufacturer of traditional Sevillian ceramics, based in Alcalá de Guadaíra near Sevilla in Andalusia. Their work is produced using the Cuerda Seca technique — literally "dry cord" — a method of hand-painting and firing ceramic in which each colour is separated by a thin line of manganese mixed with fat, preventing the enamel colours from bleeding into each other during firing. This technique was brought to Spain by Moorish craftsmen in the 8th century and has been practised in the Andalusian region ever since.
Each Artecer piece is individually hand-painted and finished in 24K gold enamel — making it simultaneously a functional object and a piece of genuine artisan craft. The Hispacer brand name was used for export production. This clock was made in Alcalá de Guadaíra, the historic centre of Sevillian ceramic production, and represents the tradition at its most colourful and most confident.
