Giancarlo Vegni for Fasem Stripe chair, late 1970s to early 1980s — wide horizontal leather bands on a sleek chrome tubular frame, hand-crafted in Tuscany, Italy. A sculptural and remarkably comfortable piece of Italian modern design in excellent vintage condition with beautifully aged leather patina. Ready to use.

Giancarlo Vegni — in the company of Bellini and Breuer

Fasem was founded in Tuscany and became one of Italy's most respected leather furniture manufacturers — producing designs by Giancarlo Vegni alongside licensed productions of Marcel Breuer's Cesca and Wassily chairs, and pieces by Mart Stam. Vegni's work for Fasem is consistently positioned alongside Mario Bellini's CAB 413 armchair as a defining example of the Italian modernist leather and chrome aesthetic of the 1970s — furniture that achieved the rare combination of sculptural ambition and everyday comfort. Fasem leather chairs on 1stDibs average $2,497, with sets reaching significantly higher — reflecting the enduring international collector market for Vegni's Fasem designs.

The Stripe chair

The design is deceptively simple and brilliantly considered. Wide horizontal leather bands are hand-stitched and stretched across the chrome tubular frame, forming both seat and backrest in a single continuous gesture — the leather doing structural work as well as aesthetic work, the chrome doing the rest. The result is a chair that appears to float, its mass reduced to almost nothing, yet which sits and supports with a confidence that heavier upholstered chairs rarely match.

The leather has developed a rich vintage patina over four decades — the kind of depth and warmth that only genuine age produces and that no new leather can replicate. The chrome frame shows light age-appropriate patina consistent with its years.

This chair works beautifully as a dining chair, desk chair, or statement accent piece in a mid century modern, contemporary, or design-led interior. It is the kind of furniture that anchors a room and rewards a second look.
