Heavy brushed gold aluminium case in a distinctive cantilevered wedge design, acrylic dial, 19 x 15 x 6.5cm. Fully working, keeps good time, sweeping seconds hand with a quiet audible tick. A genuinely unused piece of West German design history — still boxed, decades after it was made.
Kienzle
Kienzle is one of Germany's most respected clockmakers, founded in 1822 in Schwenningen, in the Black Forest region long associated with precision clockmaking. This piece carries Kienzle's "Electronic" branding — a genuine pre-quartz technology where a battery-powered coil periodically winds a small mainspring driving a traditional balance wheel and escapement. It bridged the gap between fully mechanical clocks and the quartz movements that would soon replace it, and represents a specific, relatively short-lived chapter of clockmaking technology.
Design & Condition
The design is confident and architectural: a heavy, solid brushed gold aluminium case cantilevers forward from its base at an angle, with the circular acrylic dial set within. Simple raised black rectangular hour markers surround a brushed gold dial face, with "KIENZLE" printed cleanly beneath centre and "MADE IN GERMANY" marked at the base. The case has real weight and presence — this is not a lightweight piece.
This example is genuine new old stock: still in its original Kienzle Electronic branded box, with no visible wear to the case or dial, and every indication it has never been displayed or used. The movement needed a clean with electrical contact cleaner to bring it back to life after however many years in storage — now running well, keeping good time, with a smooth sweeping seconds hand and a quiet, pleasant tick rather than a loud mechanical clack.
