Kienzle — Germany's oldest clockmaker, founded 1822
Kienzle was founded in Schwenningen, in Germany's Black Forest, in 1822 — making it the oldest clock company in Germany and one of the most storied names in European horology. Over two centuries the company grew from a small workshop producing 20,000 handcrafted wall clocks per year into one of Germany's largest precision manufacturers, supplying dashboard clocks to Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, and Bentley during the 1960s, and pioneering some of the first solar-powered and quartz clocks ever produced. In the 1960s and 1970s Kienzle was the market leader in Germany — the period during which this sunburst was designed and made. Comparable Kienzle wall clocks appear on 1stDibs at prices averaging $686, reflecting the brand's enduring status among serious collectors and interior designers worldwide.
The clock
The elongated brass-tone rays radiate outward with genuine sculptural depth — catching the light and casting shadows that shift through the day, giving this clock a presence that flat-faced designs simply cannot match. The polished brass dial with black Roman numerals is finished with white hands and a distinctive red sweep seconds hand — a period detail that adds a precise dash of colour against the warm brass.
At 39 cm diameter it is a versatile and well-proportioned piece — commanding enough for a living room or hallway, refined enough for a study or home office. It sits naturally in mid century modern, Eames era, Hollywood Regency, and contemporary interiors alike.
