Mallee Root Burl Wood Wall Clock — Australian Souvenir, Natural Edge
A genuinely one-of-a-kind wall clock — a natural cross-section of Western Australian Mallee root burl, polished to reveal the rich reddish-brown grain beneath its raw, dark bark edge. Genuine vintage transistorized battery movement (not quartz), brass baton markers and hands. 25.5cm (10 inches) wide, 30.5cm (12 inches) tall. Fully working, ready to hang.
No two are alike — a genuine slice of Australian nature.
Mallee is the botanical term for a group of Australian eucalypt species that grow with a single underground root system supporting multiple trunks — an unusual growth habit that produces exceptionally hard, dense, and beautifully figured wood when the root burl is cut and polished. Pieces like this were produced as souvenir craft from Western Australia, prized for their natural form as much as their function.
A live-edge silhouette, entirely shaped by nature
Unlike a manufactured clock case, this piece's shape is entirely natural — the polished burl face tapers up to a raw, dark bark-edged point, with the irregular live edge left untouched around the lower body. The rich, swirling grain pattern is unique to this specific piece of wood; no two Mallee burl clocks will ever look quite the same. Simple brass baton markers and elegant brass hands sit cleanly against the warm reddish tone of the polished burl, keeping the focus entirely on the natural material.
The movement itself is a genuine period piece — an early transistorized battery movement rather than a later quartz crystal type, consistent with Australian souvenir woodcraft of the mid-1960s to mid-1970s.
