Metamec 3857 Red & Silver Kitchen Wall Clock — 1960s British Vintage, Bakelite, Quartz
1960s Metamec red and silver bakelite kitchen wall clock, Model 3857 — a bold two-tone kitchen wall clock with a bright red outer dial and a bright silver centre disc, original bakelite case retained. 7 inches (18cm) diameter, new silent quartz movement, fully working. Ready to hang.
A confident splash of colour for a 1960s British kitchen.
Metamec — The Pride of Dereham, Norfolk
Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom, at their peak employing around 750 workers and producing 350 different models and 25,000 clocks every week. Their kitchen clock range combined honest materials and clean proportions with the practicality the working kitchen demanded, and the model 3857 was part of that mains-electric range — designed for kitchens where appliances were expected to be wired into the wall.
A bold, graphic dial
Where the cream 3857 leans soft and warm, this red and silver colourway is Metamec at its most confident — a saturated red outer band carrying crisp silver-outlined Arabic numerals, set against a bright, highly polished silver centre disc that throws light and reflection back at the viewer. The convex glass lens adds real depth to the face, catching the light as you move past it. Original black hour and minute hands are retained, with a slim red accent hand adding a final purposeful touch of colour that ties straight back into the dial.
This is a striking piece — the kind of clock that becomes a genuine focal point on a kitchen wall rather than simply telling the time on one. It has real presence without being oversized, and the mid-century colour palette sits comfortably in both a period kitchen and a modern one looking for a retro accent.
