Metamec 5629 Starburst Wall Clock — Teak & Brass, Original Hands, 1960s

A beautifully restored Metamec Model 5629 starburst wall clock — one of the most sought-after designs from the British sunburst clock era, with alternating solid brass spike rays and teak paddle finials radiating from a chrome and brass bezel.

This example has been restored to an exacting standard. The movement has been replaced with a new UTS quartz mechanism, chosen specifically to accept and run the original black hands and gold seconds hand without any modification — so the clock keeps its authentic 1960s look while running reliably day to day. The movement is silent, with an incremental (not sweeping) seconds hand, so there's no audible ticking.

The dial carries the classic Metamec silhouette: an Arabic "12" at the top, stylised script numerals at 3, 6 and 9, and slender baton markers for the remaining hours, all set within a solid brass bezel. "MADE IN ENGLAND" is printed beneath the 6, confirming its British manufacture.

About Metamec

Founded in East Dereham, Norfolk in 1947, Metamec grew from a small wartime engineering offshoot into Britain's largest domestic clock manufacturer. By the 1960s the company employed around 800 people and was producing some 25,000 clocks a week, supplying furniture retailers and high street jewellers across the country. Metamec invested early in quartz movement technology and became particularly known for its bold, sculptural starburst wall clocks of the 1960s and 70s — designs like this one that came to define the look of the British mid-century home. The company went into receivership in 1984 as German and Far Eastern imports took hold of the market, closing its Dereham factory for good in 1994. Original Metamec pieces, especially starbursts in good original condition, are now genuinely collectable.
