Metamec 5859 Starburst Wall Clock, Copper Black Bakelite, 1960s, New Quartz

A rare and striking example of the Metamec model 5859 in its copper variant — one of the most visually distinctive wall clocks to come out of 1960s Britain. 28cm (11 inch) diameter, new quartz movement, fully working. Ready to hang.

The copper-and-black combination is far less commonly seen than the standard Metamec 5859Z — examples in this condition rarely surface.

Metamec

Metamec was founded around 1941 as an offshoot of furniture manufacturer Jentique, based in Dereham, Norfolk, and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom — producing around 350 models and 25,000 clocks a week at their peak, with a workforce of roughly 750. They became particularly known for their iconic large sunburst designs in chrome, teak and brass, of which the 5859 is a striking example. "Made in England" is marked on the reverse of the dark Bakelite case.

Design & Styling

The design centres on a convex-glass dial ringed with a deep brown-black lacquered Bakelite surround, itself encircled by a polished copper frame studded with round copper ball details. Four sharp copper finials — two horizontal, one at 12 and one at 6 — project from the frame in classic compass-point style, giving the clock real presence on the wall.

The white dial centre carries the Metamec name and "Made in England" text, with bold period numerals set in the copper chapter ring. Black hour and minute hands are paired with a red sweeping seconds hand for a striking finishing touch. Running on a new quartz movement (AA battery) — accurate and silent.
