Metamec Model 3857 Wall Clock – 1960s Cream Gold Kitchen Clock Quartz Converted Made in England
A warm and quietly elegant 1960s Metamec kitchen wall clock — the model 5867, originally mains-powered and now professionally converted to a new quartz battery movement, making it as practical today as it was when it left the Dereham factory sixty years ago.
The dial is one of Metamec's most appealing kitchen clock designs: a two-tone composition with a cream outer ring carrying white-outlined Arabic numerals and fine dash minute markers, and a polished spun gold centre disc that catches the light with a subtle warmth. The convex glass lens gives the whole face a satisfying sense of depth, and the slim gold-tone bezel frames it cleanly. New hands have been professionally fitted to match the period character of the clock.
Originally wired for mains power, this clock has been converted to quartz battery — the conversion that transforms a vintage piece from a wall decoration into a genuinely usable timepiece, with no trailing cables and a movement that will keep perfect time for years.
Metamec — The Pride of Dereham, Norfolk
Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom, at their peak employing around 750 workers and producing 350 different models and 25,000 clocks every week. Their 1960s kitchen clock range combined the honest materials and clean proportions of the mid-century British domestic aesthetic with the practicality that the working kitchen demands. A Metamec from this period is a genuine piece of British industrial and design heritage.
The model 5867 was part of Metamec's mains-electric range — clocks designed for the kitchens of a generation that expected their appliances to be wired into the wall. Converting them to quartz battery is now standard practice, and when done properly — as here — it gives the clock a new lease of life without compromising its original character in any way.
