A clean, bold and entirely timeless Metamec wall clock from the 1960s — the model 5868, one of the most enduringly useful designs in the Metamec range. White dial, polished chrome, all-black hands. Nothing wasted. Entirely resolved.

The bright white embossed dial presents bold raised black Arabic numerals at a scale that reads clearly from across any room, with a continuous outer ring of precise dash minute markers and the Metamec name in its characteristic boxed cartouche below twelve. The polished chrome bezel is close-fitting and precise, the convex glass adding a satisfying depth to the face that flat alternatives cannot match. All-black hands throughout — hour, minute and seconds — giving the clock a graphic crispness and unity that the red-seconds variants lack. New silent quartz movement fitted. 8 inches (20cm) diameter. Ready to hang.

Metamec — The Pride of Dereham, Norfolk

Metamec was founded in Dereham, Norfolk in 1947 and grew to become the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom, at their peak producing 350 different models from their Norfolk factory. The 5868 is one of the most practically useful and aesthetically coherent designs in the range — a clock that works on a kitchen wall, a workshop wall, a hallway or a home office without demanding attention or making a period statement. It simply tells the time, clearly and well, in a composition that has not dated in sixty years.

Originally mains-powered, this example has been fitted with a new silent quartz battery movement. The original character of the piece is entirely intact — only the trailing cable is gone.
