Metamec Model 5868 Wall Clock, Rare Yellow Dial, 1960s Kienzle Quartz
1960s Metamec model 5868 wall clock, rare pale yellow dial — the same enduringly popular chrome-bezel design produced at the Dereham factory, in a colourway rarely seen on the market. 20.5cm (8 inch) diameter, fitted with a Kienzle quartz movement, original hands retained, very faint ticking, step seconds. Ready to hang.
The 5868 at its most sought-after — this pale yellow colourway is genuinely hard to find.
Metamec
Metamec were based in Dereham, Norfolk, and at their peak were the largest clock manufacturer in the United Kingdom, producing 350 models and 25,000 clocks per week. The 5868 is one of their most enduringly recognisable designs, most commonly found in white — the pale yellow dial seen here is a distinctly rarer colourway, sought after by collectors looking for something beyond the standard model.
Design & Styling
The pale yellow embossed dial carries bold raised black Arabic numerals and a continuous minute track, set within a deep polished chrome bezel and convex glass — the same clean, graphic presence that makes the 5868 so enduringly popular, but in a warmer, more distinctive tone than the usual white. "METAMEC" appears in its familiar boxed cartouche beneath the 12, with "Made in England" marked at the base of the dial.
The clock has been fitted with a Kienzle quartz movement, and the original hands have been retained rather than replaced — a nice touch for anyone who values keeping as much of the original clock intact as possible. The movement runs with a very faint tick and a smooth step seconds hand.
