1950s Metamec bakelite wall clock, Model 747 — the baby brother of the classic 737, in a soft cream bakelite case with flat glass rather than the 737's domed convex front. 8 inches (20.3cm) diameter, 6 inch (15.2cm) dial, 3 inches (7.6cm) deep. Fitted with a new German UTS quartz movement, original hands retained, fully working. Ready to hang.

A genuine 1950s design classic, sympathetically restored to run true.

About Metamec

Metamec was founded around 1941 in Dereham, Norfolk, as an offshoot of furniture makers Jentique — the name itself derived from "metal-work and mechanics." Their first clock, the mains-powered Model 701, appeared around 1947, and by the 1960s and 70s Metamec had grown into the largest clock manufacturer in the UK, employing around 750 people and producing some 25,000 clocks a week across 350 different models. Today, original Metamec pieces are highly sought after by mid-century collectors.

A smaller companion to the 737, with its own character

The 747 shares the same rounded clamshell-style case design as its better-known sibling, the 737, but in a smaller size and a flat glass front rather than the 737's gently domed convex glass — a genuine variant within the range, not a lesser version. The cream bakelite body has been cleaned and re-lacquered to bring back its original gloss finish, and the original time adjuster has been retained for authenticity. The clock was originally mains electric; it's now been fitted with a new German UTS quartz movement, and the original hands have been kept, so the look stays completely true to the piece.

At 8 inches across, it's a lovely compact size for a kitchen, hallway, or study wall — genuinely useful as well as decorative. Condition is very good: the glass is unmarked, and the bakelite has a genuine restored gloss.
