Paico London Starburst Wall Clock – 1960s Teak Brass Ball Tips Original Movement 15.75 Inch
A handsome and well-proportioned Paico starburst wall clock from the late 1960s to early 1970s — a piece from one of the less commonly encountered names in British mid-century clock production, and all the more interesting for it.
Alternating solid teak flat-blade rays radiate outward from the brass bezel, interspersed with slender brass rod spokes each tipped with a warm brass ball finial — a detail that gives this clock a playfulness and elegance that the more austere all-brass and all-chrome starburst designs cannot match. The combination of natural teak grain and warm brass creates a composition that is quintessentially mid-century in its warmth and character. The gold-tone sunburst dial carries bold black Arabic numerals in an elegant cursive script, with slim dark hands and the Paico name printed below twelve. The original battery movement is present and working.
15.75 inches (40cm) overall diameter, 7 inch (18cm) dial face. Ready to hang.
Paico of London — A Rarer Find
Paico were a London-based clock manufacturer who produced a range of starburst and sunburst wall clocks during the 1960s and 1970s — pieces that sat firmly in the same mid-century modern tradition as the more widely known Metamec and Westclox designs, but with a character and quality entirely their own. Paico starburst clocks are significantly less commonly found than their Metamec counterparts, and original examples with working movements are increasingly sought after by collectors who have moved beyond the better-known British makers.
The ball-tipped brass rod spokes alternating with teak blade rays is one of the most elegant starburst configurations of the era — the brass balls adding a sculptural, almost Sputnik-like dimension to the composition that flat-spoked alternatives lack. A proper piece of British mid-century design from a manufacturer that deserves to be better known.
