Pifco Metamec Bakelite Wall Clock, 1960s, Brown, Brass Bezel, Gold and Red Hands, England

A handsome and substantial vintage wall clock carrying the Pifco brand on the dial and the Metamec name on the case — a classic example of the OEM arrangements that characterised British domestic clock production in the 1960s, where Metamec of Dereham, Norfolk manufactured the clock in its entirety and supplied it to Pifco of Manchester for sale under their brand. Both names are part of British electrical manufacturing heritage, and this clock carries both.

The dark brown Bakelite case is large and bold at 10.5 inches in diameter, framing a 9 inch white dial with bold black Arabic numerals and a mixed dash and arrow minute track, all behind a polished brass inner bezel and convex glass. The gold hands are paired with a contrasting red seconds hand — a combination that gives this clock real visual impact. The Made in England mark appears on the dial.

Originally mains powered with a Metamec mains movement — itself carrying the Metamec name, confirming the complete British provenance of the piece — the clock has been converted to battery quartz with matched replacement hands. Ready to hang straight away.

Pifco and Metamec — Two British Icons

Pifco — the Provincial Incandescent Fittings Company — was established in Manchester in 1900 by Joseph Webber and grew to become one of Britain's most recognised domestic electrical brands. By the 1960s Pifco were manufacturing and distributing a full range of electrical appliances including clocks, teasmades, fairy lights and heating appliances from their Failsworth headquarters. Metamec, based in Dereham, Norfolk, were the UK's largest clock manufacturer at their peak — employing 750 people and producing 350 models at a rate of 25,000 clocks per week. This clock brings both names together: Metamec manufacturing, Pifco distribution, Made in England throughout.
