Psychedelic Abstract Glass Wall Clock, 1960s, Op Art, Believed French, Unique Vintage
A genuinely one-of-a-kind vintage wall clock that functions as much as a piece of art as a timepiece. The face is a large curved glass panel — concave in form, with softly rounded corners — decorated on the reverse with an explosion of abstract colour: deep crimson, magenta, violet, burnt orange and gold, rendered in pigment and glitter in a radiating burst pattern that draws the eye directly to the centre. Four large gold glitter disc markers sit at the quarter hours, with gold bar indices between. The overall effect is unmistakably of its era — vivid, visceral, and rooted in the Op Art and psychedelic visual culture of the 1960s.
The reverse of the glass is finished in a rough olive-green textured coating, giving the piece a purposeful, crafted quality on both sides. The concave form means the glass rises gently at the corners when laid flat, giving it a subtle three-dimensional presence on the wall. The clock retains its original hanging bracket and has been fitted with a new battery quartz movement and period-appropriate gold hands.
No maker's mark has been identified on the glass itself. The original movement — a French electromagnetic balance-wheel mechanism stamped ETANCHE (sealed), running on 1.5V — confirms the piece dates to the 1960s and is consistent with French manufacture of the period. A rare and striking piece: large in scale, bold in colour, and unlike anything else on the market.
Origin & Provenance
The original movement removed from this clock is a French electromagnetic balance-wheel mechanism of the type produced in France from the 1920s through to approximately 1970. The green plastic housing, the "ETANCHE" (sealed) stamp on the battery compartment, and the 1.5V specification are all consistent with French manufacture of the 1960s. The rough olive-green textured reverse finish and the concave curved glass form are further details consistent with French decorative glass production of the period. While no factory mark has been found on the glass, the totality of the evidence points clearly to French origin. The piece is listed as believed French, circa 1960s.
