Vintage Diamond Shanghai Alarm Clock — NOS, Boxed, Chrome Case, Mint Green, White Dial

New old stock doesn't come along often with these Diamond-branded Shanghai clocks, and this one's a lovely example: an alarm clock, unused and still in its original red "Alarm Clock" box.

The Diamond brand

The Diamond brand traces back to the Tak On Clock Factory, founded in Shanghai in 1932, whose first product line was called Double Arrow. The factory was destroyed during the Japanese invasion in 1937 but rebuilt the following year under the name Jin Xing Industrial Association. Production continued through the decades that followed, and in 1955 the company was folded into the newly formed Shanghai Clock and Watch Industry Company alongside around 200 other firms. From 1958 onward, output was branded Diamond, a name that became widely recognised across Asia and beyond, exported for decades on both alarm clocks and watches.

The clock

This example has a rounded chrome case with a mint green back and a carrying handle over a single bell dome, a crisp white dial with bold Arabic numerals, gold hour and minute hands, and a red seconds hand. A distinctive fan-shaped alarm indicator sits above the diamond logo, a nice period design touch. Mechanical wind-up movement, set and adjusted via the knobs on the back.
