A beautiful and unusual vintage wall clock by Weimar Electronic — produced in East Germany during the 1970s and quite unlike the industrial metal Weimar clocks more commonly found. This example uses a full porcelain dinner plate as the clock face — a decorative object in its own right, transformed into a working timepiece with remarkable elegance.

The plate carries a dense and intricate cobalt blue folk art floral border — stylised seed pods, tulips, bell flowers and trailing foliage running continuously around the wide rim. The clock face is printed directly onto the porcelain centre: two concentric circles form the chapter ring with bold Roman numerals at the quarter hours and bar markers between, with a decorative cobalt blue flower rosette at the centre around the hand boss. The original gold brass hands — hour, minute and seconds — are all present and working.

The original quartz movement is fitted and working. The porcelain is in excellent condition — clean, bright and unmarked save for minor age-related spotting consistent with a piece of this age.

Weimar Electronic — East German Manufacture

Weimar Electronic were a state-owned East German manufacturer producing clocks and electrical equipment during the GDR period. Their output ranged from industrial factory clocks to decorative domestic pieces, of which this porcelain plate clock represents the more refined end — designed for the home interior rather than the workplace, and combining the practical function of a clock with the decorative tradition of German folk ceramic art. Pieces by Weimar Electronic are increasingly collected outside Germany as interest in GDR design and manufacture continues to grow.
